What are the treatment options for cancer patients?
M. D. Anderson's multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists provides patients with a range of treatment options that include Standard Care, Care Paths, and Clinical Trials.

Standard Care
Standard care is a term for treatments that are scientifically proven and medically accepted procedures. The standard care chosen to treat a patient depends upon a number of criteria including the type and stage of the cancer. The care given may consist of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, or a combination of treatments.

Care Paths
M. D. Anderson has established care paths for the treatment of cancers. Each care path is drawn from standard care options that have consistently proven most successful and most cost-effective. Of course, each patient is treated individually and, if necessary, with treatment options other than those detailed in the care path.

Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that involve patients. Each study is designed to find better ways to prevent, detect, diagnose, or treat cancer and to answer scientific questions. M. D. Anderson's mission is to eliminate cancer and allied diseases as significant health problems. A commitment to cancer research is also required as part of M. D. Anderson's designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Center Act of 1971. M. D. Anderson physician-scientists conduct many clinical trials, striving to find breakthrough treatments and cures for cancer.
