1 About
this CD ROM version of the Guide for Referring Physicians
This guide is intended to be a ready
reference for referring physicians, supplying descriptions of the
centers where patients receive care and the physicians who provide
it. The guide comprises five sections.
- Multidisciplinary Care Centers
and Diagnostic Services lists the multidisciplinary care centers
where
patients are evaluated and treated, names the physicians who treat
them, and describes the services the
centers provide and the diseases the physicians treat. Staff
listings typically include medical oncologists,
surgeons, and radiation oncologists.
- Clinical Divisions and
Departments describes the academic divisions and departments
involved in
clinical and surgical care (e.g., gynecologic oncology, diagnostic
radiology, surgical oncology).
- Physician Directory lists
physicians on staff in alphabetical order by last name. Information
about each
physician, including medical and postgraduate training, academic
title, clinical interests and expertise,
and contact numbers (phone, fax, and mail) are posted.
- The last two sections describe
supplementary programs and services of interest to physicians
and to
patients.
If you would like to refer a patient,
please follow the directions in this guide’s How to Refer a Patient.
If you have previously referred a patient and know the name of the
physician charged with care, you may consult the Physician Directory
section containing the alphabetical listing of physicians. For
information on the scope of practice within a particular specialty,
refer to the departmental listing.
The M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Website (http://www.mdanderson.org)
offers additional information about the care available, a clinical
faculty listing, and opportunities to refer a patient or review active
clinical trials.
This guide also supplies information about programs designed to support
both patient and referring physician throughout referral, evaluation,
and treatment and even after cancer therapy ends.
- The International Program
provides translators for all patients who do not speak English.
- Anderson Network brings
patients together to discuss common problems and celebrate
individual
successes, and personnel are ready to meet a range of challenges,
whether they be travel arrangements
or spiritual guidance.
- Life After Cancer Care
addresses follow-up care for all patients who have had cancer,
whether or not
they were treated at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
- Consult the programs and services
sections for information about these and other programs. A quick
reference guide to phone numbers frequently called by referring
physicians and by patients is supplied as well.
We hope that you find this guide
useful and relevant and that it helps you meet the information needs of
your patients. If you have suggestions about how future editions of this
publication might be enhanced, please contact us at
